Shogun is a historical drama television series based on the 1975 novel by James Clavell that is set to premiere on Hulu, Disney+, and FX in the United States, Disney+ (Via Star) internationally, Disney+ and Star+ in Latin America.
Clavell's ShÅgun presents a dramatized adaptation of actual events and historical occurrences. The character John Blackthorne draws loose inspiration from the historical English navigator William Adams, who, in real-life Japan, achieved the status of a samurai under Tokugawa Ieyasu (whom the character Yoshii Toranaga is modeled after).
